A man threatened two 16-year-old girls with a knife as they walked along London Road in Dorking.
Detectives have appealed for the public's help to trace the man who pulled the blade on the pair between around 6.45pm and 7pm last night (Friday).
He approached from the opposite direction, just past the Esso petrol station, and as the girls passed, the man bumped into one of them, who apologised. The suspect then pulled out a knife in his right hand and asked the victim to repeat what she had said.
He then turned around and walked off at speed towards the alleyway which joins London Road and the park. The two girls ran off in the direction of High Street.
Detective Sergeant Antony Preston said: "This was a frightening experience for the two girls involved and we are very keen to trace the individual involved.
"I would ask anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area last night or who recognises the description to contact us as a matter of urgency."
The man is described as being of Indian appearance, aged around 40 and between 5ft 4" to 5ft 8" tall. He was unshaven with black stubble and was wearing a dark coloured beanie hat, a black jacket that looked too big for him and cream or light brown chino style trousers.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation should call Surrey Police on 101 quoting MV/13/2240 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
