Why is Salfords Primary School set to become an academy?

SALFORDS Primary School is planning to convert to academy status in July.

In a letter to parents, chairman of governors Chris Botten explained that schools placed in special measures by Ofsted – as Salfords was last year – are required to become academies under Department for Education policy. After a recommendation from the Government, the Copsleigh Avenue school will join multi-academy trust GLF Schools, meaning it is no longer run by the local authority.

The trust, which includes Lime Tree Primary School in Reigate, can share staff and support between its members.

Salfords head Martin Beard, told the Mirror: "We are pleased that we have found an academy provider that has a similar ethos to the one that we have at our school, which is the children are the most important aspect and they have a right to a good education and positive outcomes.

"Now I know there's lots of different types of academies and this is a positive move for us in that, from a parents' perspective, they will not observe a change in the running of the school because I'm the substantive head and I will continue to make the decisions."
