STAFF at an outdoor supplies shop were given two days' notice before their shop closed down.

Millets in Dorking High Street informed workers last Thursday that the outlet would be closing on Saturday.

The store held a 50 per cent off sale on its two remaining days of trade.

Maureen Lewington, who lives in Dorking and works for the Advertiser, said: "When I went in on Saturday and couldn't believe how busy it was.

"They only had one till and people were lining up all the way through the shop.

"There was one lady whose job was basically just to organise the queue, and I asked her what was going on.

"She told me that they had been told on Gala Night on Thursday that it was closing in two days and they had been offered jobs at either Epsom and Redhill, otherwise they were jobless."

Caroline Burgess, of Moores Road, Dorking, added: "I have never seen anything like it.

"People were quite literally pushing each other out the way to grab a pair of gloves.

"It was like hell on Earth. There were massive signs on the windows saying 50 per cent off, and people were buying baskets worth of things.

"I'm sure the company made a fortune. They should have just had a half price sale on the whole time."

The store, which sold clothing and accessories for activities such as hiking and camping, is currently closed with signs confirming the move.

The company had not commented on the closure as the Advertiser went to press.
