SURREY Police is getting ready to make sure that the Investec Derby Festival weekend is an enjoyable and safe event for race-goers and disruption to Epsom residents is kept to a minimum.
The two day racing festival at Espom Racecourse ,features a Ladies Day on Friday May 31 and the Investec Derby Day on Saturday June 1.
The event, one of the highlights of the sporting calendar, is the largest annual gathering in Surrey and regularly attracts up to 150,000 visitors.
Police officers will join colleagues from the other emergency services and partner agencies to support Epsom Downs Racecourse staff to ensure that months of planning are put into action to provide a smooth-running event to be enjoyed by all.
To manage traffic demands and minimise disruption to people in Epsom, many roads around Epsom Downs will have temporary alterations. Waterloo Road will be closed around Epsom Railway Station as part of plans to deal with the amount of visitors arriving in the centre of Epsom on Derby Day.
In order to plan your journey, please visit www.epsomdowns.co.uk/your-visit for more information and take note of the traffic signing on the day.
Superintendent Sharon Bush from Surrey Police said: " We are expecting thousands of people from across the country to travel to Epsom to enjoy what promises to be an exciting two days of racing.
"Our number one priority over the weekend is to maintain public safety and security so that people can enjoy this fantastic event.
"While security measures have been put in place, I'd like to ask for the co-operation and vigilance of people attending to ensure everyone remains safe.
"I would also like to remind those attending that Surrey Police will not tolerate anti-social behaviour or public order incidents and anyone found to be committing offences will be dealt with robustly.
"While we work closely with the event organisers to minimise disruption to local people and ensure that travel to and from the event is as trouble free as possible, I'd also please ask for people to use public transport if they can and consider their journeys carefully.
"Those who must drive should exercise patience, allow plenty of time and park only in the clearly marked areas. Epsom town centre should also be avoided if you're driving.
"I would like to reassure members of the public that Surrey Police has experience of dealing with major events and has well-rehearsed plans in place to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.
