BINS are overflowing at Horley Churchyard after a spate of littering.
The Church Road graveyard has been blighted by crisp packets and other rubbish strewn across the graves, paths and grassy verges.
As a result the bins' contents – one of which is supposed to be for compostable waste only – are now spilling onto the ground.
The site gardener is now emptying the bins in an attempt to keep the churchyard clean for the public.
But Reverend Calvert Prentis pleaded with residents to take care of their churchyard.
He said: "We have someone who cleans the site regularly but people are still dropping litter.
"There is paper from flowers, crisp packets – it's just general litter.
"It is a real shame for people who use the churchyard so we are trying to get on top of it and come up with a solution."
Compostable waste, such as dead flowers and cut grass, should be going in one bin, with the general waste in another.
But due to the sheer amount of litter being dropped, the grass cuttings are currently spilling out onto the floor.
One member of the public, who asked not to be named, said: "The mess has been there for weeks.
"It is very upsetting for mourners."
Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, which is responsible for rubbish collection in the area, had not responded when the Mirror went to press.
