HUNDREDS will join in the 14th Reigate and Redhill YMCA Fun Run when it returns next week, raising thousands of pounds for charity.
But for Clare Marchment from Merstham, who is in training for the one-mile race at Priory Park, it will be more of a challenge than for most. Born with a visual impairment, she has become completely blind over the past few years.
"It's about having a goal, to think 'I am going to do it'," said the 44-year-old. "And it is something to build on for next year.
"Running on a treadmill is different. It's daunting running outside, but if you are with someone you know and can trust, it helps. Then you have this feeling of being free, you feel the wind blowing through your hair – it's lovely."
"I wanted to set myself back on the right track," she added. "I have had anxiety and depression and aside from taking tablets, the best thing for that is a workout at the gym and when something like the fun run comes around, that is another little goal.
"When I get across the finish line I am going to have a big smile on my face, and probably a few tears of happiness."
Clare is one of four people in the YMCA's exercise referral class – for people with long-term disability and those recovering from health setbacks – taking part in the fun run. Others, including 40-year-old Lee Grover, will also be taking on the five-mile race at the event on Sunday May 5.
YMCA gym instructor Lesley Ewins, who along with Lee will be supporting Clare around the one-mile course, knows the value of exercise having lost 16 stone over the past decade.
"Exercise is the way forward," she said. "The fun run is absolutely mind-blowing. We turn up at Priory Park to set up in the morning and there's nothing there. By 11am it's amazing, there's suddenly a race track, and a sea of people. It is such a fun event – even when it rains."
More than 13,000 adults and children have taken part in the past 13 years and this time 1,500 people are expected to tackle either the one-mile or five-mile races, raising around £10,000.
It is hoped more than 30 sports clubs will also take part in the Festival of Sport which runs in the park alongside the fun run.
