A CHARM offensive by developers has failed to quell public concern.
Changing the character of the area, and problems surrounding access were two of the concerns raised at a public exhibition in Bletchingley on Monday.
But developer Bacchus Partners, which is looking to develop land behind the Whyte Hart Hotel, off Outwood Lane, has pledged to listen to residents' concerns over its plans to build four three-bedroom homes, with 11 car parking spaces.
The developer wants the homes to be built on a "burgage plot" to stick to the history of the village – a long and narrow plot of land, with narrow street-frontage.
But a neighbour of the proposed development, Geoffrey Smithson, said: "I think the concerns will always be that it will change the character of the village and that it is going to impact on existing buildings.
"It is quite a high site compared to the existing buildings around it. It is a bit better than previous applications because it has been given more thought."
Linda Baharier, of Outwood Lane, added: "The access road is one of the narrowest points of Outwood Lane. The road will take away five car parking spaces in the road and a lot of the homes down there don't have anywhere else to park their cars, but on the road. It is an accident waiting to happen."
A spokesman from the developer said: "The proposed access off Outwood Lane provides sufficient visibility.
"We do, however, understand local concerns."
