People in Cranleigh are being encouraged to do their Christmas shopping in the village rather than buying gifts online.
The Cranleigh Christmas Spree involves residents obtaining a reward card that can be used in 41 different local retailers.
Collecting four stamps on a reward card entitles residents to special offers and discounts in participating stores, while 8 stamps allows residents to be put into a prize draw worth £1000.
The initiative has been thought up by the Cranleigh Chamber of Commence and committee member Sarah Woodhead has been working hard to encourage locals to sign up.
'One objective is to encourage consumers to buy locally, rather than travelling away from the village to larger neighbouring towns, or using the internet'. said Mrs Woodhead
'This initiative is to support the local, predominantly independent, retailers so we can look to a future with a bustling high street full of independent successful businesses'.
With online retailers posing a threat to local high street shops, Sarah hopes that the Christmas Spree could help safeguard Cranleigh's high street.
'Without a combined effort by retailers and community, the local village shops could slowly be lost. We are lucky in Cranleigh to have a fresh fishmonger, a butchers and an independent department store'.
'We hope consumers will purchase from a few shops they normally frequent, and with the 8 sticker incentive of a prize draw for £1,000 we hope they will visit different shops to fill their card thus increasing footfall and spend in shops above the normal pattern of local spending'.
The reward cards were given out to local people at the Christmas Lights switch on and can be picked up anytime until Christmas Eve.
