THE RSPCA says horses which escaped from a waterlogged field into a main road are being looked after.
Concerned readers had called the Mirror worried about the animals' welfare.
Some feared the ponies – currently grazing on a small field on the corner of Dovers Green Road and Castle Drive in Reigate – had been abandoned without adequate food, water or shelter. Others reported the animals had been spotted on the road having escaped their enclosure.
While police say they are monitoring the situation, the animal welfare charity says all is well.
Diane Roberts from the RSPCA said: "The horses do have an owner who is providing the horses with food and a water supply, which is not visible without entering the field.
"There have been problems with the horses getting out on to the road and we have warned the owner to improve the fencing and they have done that.
"We are continuing to work with them to ensure the health and safety of the horses that are kept on this piece of land."
According to people living near the field, police have also been seen around the area.
Dawn Groom from Surrey Police said: "We have been in close contact with the RSPCA and continue to monitor the situation alongside them."
One neighbour, who didn't want to be named, said: "What worries me is that's the site of an old nursery. There's lots of broken glass all over the floor and I worry the horses are just eating it."
Others were concerned about the waterlogged ground.
The owner of the field was unavailable for comment as the Mirror went to press.
