One of Dorking's most iconic landmarks has been adorned with some seasonal headgear thanks to the town's guerrilla knitters. On Monday morning, rush hour motorists were greeted by the sight of the metal cockerel statue on the A24/Deepdene Avenue roundabout wearing a colourful Easter bonnet. Knitting teacher Clare Davies, of the Knit 'n' Knatter group which meets at the Fluff-a-Torium shop in West Street, said it had taken between 15 and 20 people about six weeks to create the 5ft wide hat. She told the Advertiser: "We rather underestimated how wide his comb was – it was meant to sit a bit further down – and we were debating whether to take it away again and make it wider. "We thought it would be nice to do something for Easter and came up with the bonnet as eggs seemed a bit obvious, plus he's a cockerel. It also gave lots of scope for people's creativity because there are lots of knitted flowers on there. A lot of people put a lot of time into it – it was quite a big project." The group has previously decorated the statue with knitted items to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and Christmas. Mrs Davies said other projects were being planned but declined to give away any secrets, adding mysteriously: "We might be tempted to think about a nice pair of Lycra shorts for him at some point."
