A BURST water main has closed the A217 Brighton Road between Burgh Wood and Banstead crossroads this morning (Friday).
The northbound carriageway has been shut after water leaking onto the road froze overnight causing sheet ice.
Congestion is already building on the busy road, with tailbacks to B221 Tattenham Way junction.
Surrey Roads Police officers said gritting it was "fighting a losing battle" as the water washed the grit away.
THERE is also congestion on the northbound B2217 Bolters Lane between B2219 Holly Lane Banstead and A2022 Winkworth Road.
PEBBLE Hill Road in Betchworth reopens at 5pm today following a five-month closure to replace ageing water mains.
