EAST Surrey has had its coldest night of the winter so far. The temperature at Gatwick fell before dawn to -6C. At midnight, the temperature at Mugswell, near Lower Kingswood was down to -5C (23F) and to -6C (21F) at Outwood Lane, Chipstead, according to weather expert Ian Currie. Earlier this week, Mr Currie recorded -8C (18F) at Chipstead Valley Weather Station. He said that by dawn today (Friday), it may well be colder than that. At midnight in Reigate, it was -2C (28F) with a hard frost, so motorists could expect to be scraping thick frost off car windscreens before they set off for work. 7am UPDATE: At Gatwick Aiport, the temperature fell to -6C (21F) at 4.50am. At Charlwood, at 7am, it was a numbing -5.6C (22F). Further afield, at 7am it was -6C (21F) at Eastleigh Airport, Southampton; -6C (21F) at Hurn Airport, Bournemouth; and just under -9C (16F) at Lambourn, West Berkshire. This made it the coldest night of the winter so far. 7.30am update: -5C (23F) at Heathrow Airport. It will be milder tonight, says the Met Office, with cloud and some rain.
