A NEW road layout in Redhill town centre is "an accident waiting to happen" because of drivers flouting a no-right-turn rule, say motorists.
They have voiced concerns over the newly built entrance and exit to Marketfield Way car park, now situated off the A23.
Drivers coming from the direction of the station must continue to the Belfry roundabout, turn around and then turn left into the car park. When leaving, motorists should turn left.
But the poor signage has confused drivers and led to problems.
When a Mirror reporter visited the scene, the "no right turn" sign at the car park exit was covered by roadworks barriers and a yellow sign directing drivers to the roundabout to turn back and enter the car park on the left was being ignored.
In just ten minutes, more than ten drivers were seen stopping on the busy A23 to turn right, causing drivers behind them to brake heavily or swerve left into the cycle lane to get past.
Reigate resident Peter Jenkins, who uses the car park regularly, said: "There is a sign which states that it is forbidden to turn right out of the car park on to the main A23 and I see this flouted daily.
"The situation is exacerbated by buses parking on the side of the road and blocking the view from the car park entrance.
"Likewise there was a sign when the new entrance was created into that car park that showed that the correct way to enter the car park from the direction of the station was to go around the Belfry roundabout and to enter the car park by turning left into the entrance.
"Every day I see cars flouting this instruction, too, and stopping in the centre of the road waiting to turn right which holds up the traffic coming from the station roundabout.
"There needs to be clear and correct signage and this needs to be addressed as soon as possible otherwise sooner or later there will be a massive pile up there and, very likely, a fatality."
On the Mirror's Facebook page, Jules Spice said: "The turning into Marketfield car park is an accident waiting to happen!"
Susie Wenne said: "I think the whole thing is a bad idea and makes traffic flow worse right now not better. Marketfield car park entry /exit is really dangerous."
Clinton Rose said: "The entrance/exit out of Marketfield car park is dangerous due to the buses being parked obscuring the view."
In a response to Mr Jenkins' complaint, a Surrey Highways officer said the Balanced Network team will inspect the junction and consider "different, larger signage".
It is understood a traffic island will be installed next month to stop illegal right turns.
