HAVE you heard the one about the male model, the cake maker and the waitress?
No it's not some sordid joke – they are among the second jobs being undertaken by Surrey Police staff as listed on the force's business interests register.
The range of the 400-plus activities listed is vast – from a cleaner and a jewellery maker to a chauffeur and a guitar tutor.
Those more sports inclined include a karate instructor, clay pigeon marksman, a British Military Fitness instructor and three football coaches. While some put their creative skills to good use turning to hairdressing, singing and cake making.
An adjudication panel meets regularly to consider new applications for the register.
It takes into account factors such as conflicts of interest, or possible health and safety implications.
Some of the positions are voluntary posts.
Surrey Police spokesman James Baker said: "We aim to allow officers, special constables, staff and volunteers to pursue legitimate business interests and secondary employment where this is compatible with their duties as a member of the force.
"Requests to hold a business interest are reviewed by a panel which considers any potential conflict of interest or health and safety implications due to working hours.
"Requests are not granted if there are conflicts.
"The Police Regulations 2003 state that any interest or business secondary to Surrey Police requirement must not be carried out in duty time, must not use police services and must have no bearing on the purpose or promotion of the business interest."
Some are those on the list are part-time officers, he added.
Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner Kevin Hurley said: "Police pay and conditions have suffered significant cuts over recent years and they have not had a pay rise for the last four years.
"Surrey staff work in the most expensive county to rent and buy a home.
"There is vast attrition – the rate of officers leaving or dispersing to other forces as a result of government cuts. So I am not at all surprised that they are doing alternative jobs."
BUSINESS INTERESTS REGISTER
In accordance with national guidance from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), all Force employees, including Surrey Police staff, are required to seek approval for any business interest or secondary employment.
