EMERGENCY services received thousands of calls over the Christmas and New Year period.

More than 50,000 emergency calls were received by the South East Coast Ambulance Service in the last two weeks of last year.

From 10pm on New Year's Eve to 4am on January 1, the service handled 1,146 emergency calls – an average of more than three calls a minute.

This is down from last year's 1,167 calls. But on December 31, the ambulance service received more than 2,700 calls – an increase of about 500 on 2013.

The busiest day for Surrey Police was December 23, with 1,429 calls received across both the emergency 999 and non-emergency 101 numbers.

New Year's Day was the next most busy, with 1,355 calls across both numbers, though January 1 did have the most 999 calls in Surrey with 413.

Between December 23 and January 1, police received 11,260 calls across both numbers.

The relatively low number of police call-outs on New Year's Eve – 245 to the 999 number, and 959 across both numbers – was attributed to the high volume of officers working that night.
