TWO CHARITIES are offering a £1,000 reward for information after illegal gin traps killed two foxes in Surrey.

The League Against Cruel Sports and the Wildlife Aid Foundation (WAF), based in Leatherhead, launched the reward today for information leading to "the successful conviction of the individual or individuals responsible" for setting the traps, which killed two foxes in ten days in Guildford near Tormead School.

The brutal trap, which was outlawed in the UK in 1958, is spring-operated and has metal jaws which close around the leg of any animal which steps on it.

The jaws are so strong it is impossible for the trapped creature to escape and the trap can smash the bones of smaller creatures, or even cut their foot off.

The Wildlife Aid Foundation (WAF) has warned that the next victim could be a pet dog, a cat, or even a child. It has teamed up with The League Against Cruel Sports to offer a cash incentive fearing that there may be more of the devices in the area.

Anyone with information should contact the League via the charity's Wildlife CrimeWatch Line on 01483 361 108 or via the charity's website using its online form. Alternatively you can call Surrey Police on 101 quoting crime watch reference number: P15006136.
