A PERILOUS freezing rain turned roads icy in Surrey this morning after showers fell onto frozen ground.
Cars were covered in a stubborn film of ice as the rain hit the cold metalwork and froze solid.
Temperatures fell to -0.7C at Reigate Grammar School at 4am and to -2.1C at dawn in Charlwood.
The frosty ground was then sprinkled with rain as clouds moved in from the west. For a time, it became very slippery on some rural roads and pavements and motorists found windscreen wipers would not clear the hard layer of ice. A double rainbow could be seen in the sky over Reigate and Redhill.
The Met Office said the frost and rain should soon clear as temperatures rise. Later tonight it will become much milder although it could be wet for a time.
