PROPOSALS for a second runway at Gatwick have prompted strong reaction from the local community - but the project has never been compared to an invading horde before.
Charlwood Parish Council has likened the battle against the new runway to repelling the invading Vikings in 851AD.
A press release from the council said: "In 851 the women of Charlwood defeated the invading Danish army. In more recent years there have been three attempts to inflict a second runway on the Parish of Charlwood, all of which have been seen off.
"Charlwood parish will defeat this again."
Plans for a second runway at Gatwick are currently being considered by the Airport Commission, alongside proposals for a third runway at Heathrow.
The commission is due to recommend the best course for expanding air capacity in the South East after the General Election.
Gatwick bosses claim a recent survey shows more Londoners would prefer a new runway at Heathrow than Gatwick.
