Scammers tried to trick a Caterham resident out of £200 this morning.
They were told the money had been taken from their bank account - and they should withdraw the cash and then call back on a specific number.
Moments later the resident got a call "from Caterham Police Station" advising that they had been notified of the incident by Lloyds TSB.
A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: "Please be aware that it is not a process that would be adopted by the banks or police.
"This type of fraud has been tried before but this is the first occasion that we are aware of where the offenders have used Caterham Police Station."
