James Dyer was a whisker away from scooping a top prize in the British Beard and Moustache Championship.

The 37-year-old from Croydon Road, Caterham, impressed judges with his luxurious pencil moustache.

He said: "I've got the waxing down to a fine art, involving a combination of Vaseline and beeswax, one of which has a gorgeous melted marshmallow smell."

Caterham had its answer to Lewis Hamilton – lawn mower racing world champion Chris Thompson.

The 26-year-old osteopath, who drove to victory in a muddy field in West Sussex, the sport's national heartland, said: "The mowers can reach speeds of up to 60mph.

"It's quite hard. The mowers can rattle a round a bit.

"And I bruised my elbow in a crash."

After a long-awaited £1.5 million revamp, Redhill's Memorial Park reopened to visitors.

The park now boasts a cafe, outdoor gym, better play area and revamped tennis courts.

One visitor Rozie McPhee said: "I think it's fantastic.

"[My little sister] has gone on about it every day after school. We've waited for it for a long time.

"We have been very excited about it. It's good for Redhill's regeneration."

Unsuspecting shoppers in Redhill were stopped in their tracks by a flashmob.

A group of youngsters from the Urban Play dance troupe, based at nearby Donyngs Sports Centre, spontaneously performed a routine to Michael Jackson's Thriller,

Choreographer Lana Avis said: "It went amazingly well. The crowds were amazing.

"The kids had fun and I had fun."

Belly dancing classes were going down a storm in Redhill's Harlequin Theatre.

Lea Smith, who runs the regular Hipsinc classes, said: "Over the years belly dancing has got a bit of a salacious reputation.

"It's not all about sexy dancing and having money put in your bra."

Her oldest member, Jo Holden, retired earlier in the year, aged 94.

Fun-loving pensioners Frank Burchell and Eileen Willis-Dixon were full of Christmas cheer – although they had clocked up 164 years between them.

Mrs Willis-Dixon, 69, dressed up as an elf and created a winter wonderland in her Eden Way flat.

She said: "I suppose I'm just a big kid at heart."

And Mr Burchell, 95, her next-door neighbour, dressed as Father Christmas – a role he has done for about 40 years.

Miracle baby Jett Morris – born lighter than a bag of sugar – celebrated his first birthday.

His parents Mhairi and Paul were advised by doctors to abort him.

But Mhairi, who owns Coochicoo Children's Boutique in Horley, said: "If he was still moving and his heartbeat was strong, who are we to not give him a chance? We would forever think, 'What if?'"

She added: "He was just tiny – the size of my husband's hand."

Jett was given only a 5 to 10 per cent chance of survival by doctors.

More than 80 guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were handed in to Surrey Police during a firearms amnesty.

The haul comprised 37 handguns, 10 rifles, 10 airguns, 8 shotguns and a further 19 items such as imitation weapons.

Also handed in were more than 600 shotgun cartridges and 300 other rounds of ammunition.

New legislation, which came into effect in July, increased the maximum jail term for illegal gun possession from 10 years to life.

An explosive device was used in an unsuccessful bank cashpoint robbery in Warlingham.

Three men in balaclava helmets fled empty-handed after the incident outside the NatWest bank on Warlingham Green.
