Oh, what a year it was... heartache and joy in 2014

Eye-catching images were unveiled offering an exciting future for Redhill.

Developers' drawings of modern, glass-fronted shop and restaurant facades for the centre of the town came as long-awaited hopes to revitalise Redhill gathered pace.

Outlined were proposals for four large retail units, four "family restaurants" and 90 homes.

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration Natalie Bramhall said: "There is a huge amount of interest in Redhill. People can finally see its potential."

The fatal stabbing of 17-year-old pupil Elizabeth Thomas rocked Oxted School.

Police were called to a flat in nearby Amy Road where they found the body of the teenager.

The family of Miss Thomas paid tribute to her, calling her a "kind, caring, loving and gentle girl".

Her murderer Steven Miles, 16, also a pupil at the school, was later jailed for life.

It was a high note for a harp company when the Duke of Kent visited.

He was given a conducted tour of Pilgrim Harps – based in Tilburstow Hill Road, Godstone – and was shown various aspects of harp manufacturing.

The royal visitor heard a demonstration of several different types of harp.

The company, formed in 1980, makes hand-crafted instruments ranging from small Celtic instruments to full-size orchestral concert harps.

The flooding repair bill across Surrey topped £12 million after weeks of almost incessant rain.

Dozens of homes and gardens in Whyteleafe were flooded, the Flanchford Road bridge in Leigh was severely damaged, and reservoirs were installed to shore up Woldingham.

Surrey County Council sought Government funding for help to repair six miles of A roads and B roads, plus 39 bridges.

A distraught Horley dog owner plunged into raging water to save her beloved pup as it started to drown.

Staffordshire bull terrier Carly was rescued by Jessica Lynn, 20.

Jessica said: "Carly was panicking. I looked into her eyes and I will never forget the look – it was just horror."

The dog made a full recovery.

Godstone Farm opened its new Dino Trail, complete with 15-foot tall dinosaur inhabitants.

Dozens of people turned out for the trail's official opening, which included an appearance by the farm's mascot Dino the Dinosaur.

The "great pong of Redhill" dominated the news.

With the stench from the nearby landfill site upsetting many residents, operators Biffa released statistics showing there was no health risk.

A spokesman refused to comment on whether complaints about headaches, nausea and respiratory problems were linked to the stench.

However, Public Health England and the Environment Agency, said more analysis was needed.

A Chelsea team – and ex-England cricketer Phil Tufnell – lured a large crowd to Redhill FC.

They drew against a Reigate and Banstead Mayoral Invitation XI, comprising players from Redhill, South Park, Horley, Chipstead and Reigate Priory football clubs.

A marching band, a sports car leading the cortege and some mourners in blue – the funeral of Caterham boy Breck Bednar, 14, was full of poignancy.

Pupils from St Bede's School in Redhill were among the pallbearers. Breck died from a stab wound in February.

Lewis Daynes, 19, from Grays, Essex, later admitted murdering Breck.
