A £7 MILLION redevelopment is in store for Caterham, with 20 ageing flats in Ninehams Gardens set to be demolished next year to make way for a mixture of 35 houses and flats.

The properties were built in 1946 and, according to freehold owner Tandridge District Council, are in need of substantial repair. Twelve of the flats are owned by leaseholders, and the rest are used by the council for temporary accommodation.

Housing officers will be discussing options including buying the leasehold properties, and re-housing the other residents who live in the temporary accommodation.

A planning application, due in the spring, will be for a mixture of affordable rent and shared ownership homes, which will be available to people on the council's housing register.

Simon Ainsworth, who chairs the housing committee, said: "We are keen to move forward as quickly as possible." to reduce any further uncertainty for existing residents.

"We will work with our partners to find suitable solutions for our current residents, as well to ensure high quality homes for the future."
