WE COULD have a white Easter, according to weather experts.
A blast of winter weather has taken temperatures below freezing since the weekend, crippling train services and leaving some drivers stranded.
While East Surrey has escaped the worst of the snow, schools in Caterham, Godstone and Horley were closed on Tuesday as ice made travelling unsafe.
But the Mirror's meteorologist Ian Currie says the cold snap will extend into a cold spell and the winter weather could last until Easter.
"It is difficult to be sure but there is a high possibility of a white Easter," he said.
"It happened in 2008. There is as great a risk of snow at Easter as Christmas.
"At the moment spring does not look like arriving."
Monday was the first time it has not gone above freezing on a day in March since 1986, while on Tuesday was the highest recorded temperature was 4C, compared to 16C last year.
As easterly winds from Scandinavia battered the south of the country, icicles formed on cars and snow blew off roofs causing mini-blizzards in the towns.
While most main roads remained clear of the snow, side roads became increasingly treacherous as ice formed.
