A stretch of Reigate High Street was covered in a grey slushy mess earlier today.
The sludge ended up on shoppers' shoes and clothing, with some people slipping on the slimy surface.
The ugly mess covered a stretch of pavement between the Old Town Hall and Boots' store.
Council workmen used high-pressure hoses to clear it away.
Reigate and Banstead Council tweeted: "We're washing off the slush in Reigate town centre.
"Grit that was used to cover an earlier oil leak has reacted badly with rain. Sorry."
