TWO men were seriously assaulted while getting into a taxi in Woking in the early hours of today (Saturday, March 9).
The attack took place in The Broadway at around 2.30am when the two victims, a 23-year-old and a 21-year-old, were getting into the vehicle.
A group of four white men approached the pair and - following a brief exchange of words - assaulted them.
One of the victims dropped his mobile phone during the attack and it is believed the phone was picked up by one of the members of the group - which left the scene by foot.
Both victims suffered head and facial injuries during the assault and were taken to local hospitals for treatment before later being discharged.
Police quickly attended the crime scene and arrested two 24-year-old men, a 26-year-old man and 27-year-old man, all from Chertsey and Addlestone, on suspicion of assault.
All four men remain in custody while the investigation continues.
Detective Constable Clare Nettleton, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a vicious and completely unprovoked attack which has left the two young men injured."
"Although we have made a number of arrests in connection with the incident I am still urging members of the public to come forward with information to help us establish the circumstances surrounding the assault."
"The attack took place in a busy area close to the centre of town and the train station, so I feel certain that passing motorists and pedestrians must have seen or heard this incident taking place."
"We are carrying out a thorough and extensive investigation into the attacks. The scene has been forensically examined and officers are currently reviewing local CCTV footage."
"Attacks of this nature are appalling and but I can assure Woking residents that we are doing everything possible to bring those responsible to justice."
Following the incident Woking Safer Neighbourhood Team officers have carried out additional high visibility patrols in the town centre and will be speaking to and updating residents and business owners in the area.
Anyone who may have seen the assaults, or who may have seen the victims or suspects in the area beforehand, should call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference WK/13/1386, or call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
