Screening for Ebola is set to be introduced at Gatwick airport from today.

Screening will start at the north terminal and will be extended to the south terminal by the end of the week.

The measures will be introduced for passengers travelling from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, which are known to be affected regions.

It is hoped the checks will provide more protection for UK residents against the deadly virus that had killed more than 4,000 people in the three regions.

Passengers will have their recent travel history assessed including who they have been in contact with and onward travel arrangements as well as a possible medical assessment conducted by trained medical personnel.

Any patients with suspected Ebola will be transferred to hospital immediately for a blood sample which will be taken to a Public Health England specialist laboratory for testing.

Ebola symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding, which are similar to other, more common, infections.

A spokeswoman for Public Health England, which will be carrying out the screenings at Gatwick, explained what will happen.

She said: "Using technology from the Border Force we will identify anyone who has travelled from, or recently visited, Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea.

"They will fill out a health questionnaire and will be able to have their temperature taken.

"If there is no cause for concern they will be given advice on what to do if they experience symptoms.

"Everybody will be asked to provide contact details so that we can get in touch with them later if needed and if they start to develop symptoms.

"Anyone showing a high temperature or other symptoms will be taken to hospital for further tests and treatment."
