REDHILL residents are getting increasingly worried about debt.

New figures reveal a "dramatic upsurge" in the number of people from the town seeking advice on the issue.

According to charity StepChange, in the first six months of this year, 662 residents in the Redhill postcode area called its debt advice helpline, compared to 483 in the same period last year – an increase of 37 per cent.

StepChange also said the average person in Redhill seeking the charity's help had just £21 left at the end of each month after bills, tax and living costs.

Residents also owed an average of £13,846 in unsecured debt including credit cards, personal loans and overdrafts.

The findings coincide with the charity's Need to Sleep campaign, to encourage people to get help if they are losing sleep over money worries.
