A REDHILL road was closed yesterday, after a collapsed manhole created a large sinkhole
Police set up a cordon around the hole, which appeared in Maple Road at around 2pm and was described by one firefighter as 15 feet deep.
A Thames Water spokesman said: "We are sorry for any inconvenience to our customers after a manhole chamber collapsed into the sewer earlier this evening.
"We have engineers on site who will make the area safe and we will carry out repairs as soon as possible."
Firefighters from Reigate station were also called to the incident. One crew member told the Mirror: "It just opened up. We had to go as safety to make sure it didn't rupture the gas main."
A resident added: "I spoke to a policeman who said, 'It's unsafe, we don't know if it will expand or get any deeper'.
"It's absolute chaos."
A police spokesman said: "Surrey Police attended Maple Road in Earlswood after substantial damage was caused to the road.
"Officers attended at around 1.45pm to put a closure in place to protect motorists and members of the public.
