POLICE are investigating allegations of assault following an incident outside the Horse Hill drilling site, near Horley, yesterday.
Officers were called to the site, where oil was recently discovered, at around 1.15pm following reports of an incident at its entrance. While there they spoke to a small group of protestors and site staff.
Two people have since made allegations of assault and an investigation is ongoing to establish what happened.
James Baker, a spokesman for Surrey Police said: "Police have been encouraging positive engagement with the local community, the company running the site and anyone expressing a wish to protest. Although there has been other protest activity over the last month, there have been no previous recorded incidents.
"Officers from the Local Safer Neighbourhood Team and Police Liaison Officers have been deployed over recent weeks and continue to be deployed to provide that engagement to all parties involved."
An anti-fracking protest has been in place at the site since last Monday, despite Horse Hill Developments, the drill operators, repeatedly stressing that the drill is for "conventional" oil targets only and not shale gas.
