ENTHUSIASTIC gardeners at Banstead Community Junior School have been awarded for their efforts for a second year.

The school received a gold award once again in the Royal Horticultural Society's South and South East in Bloom contest.

The school's gardening club, run by teaching assistant Janet Marder, was commended for its "drive and ingenuity" by the judges, who added: "The ownership and excitement on the children's faces were fascinating to watch as they maintained their gardens."

TV gardener Chris Collins, who until 2013 looked after the Blue Peter garden, presented the award to Mrs Marder.

She said: "All are involved with the school gardens through the curriculum, and the children who choose to come to gardening club love getting involved with all aspects of gardening in all weathers. Hopefully they will take their enthusiasm on to their next schools, and home to their own gardens."

The school is the only one in the South East to receive a Level 4 Award in the South and South East in Bloom – It's Your Neighbourhood competition. This award is judged on community participation, environmental responsibility and gardening achievement.
