Workers from Epsom and Ewell Borough Council have stopped a local river from flooding, saving homes and businesses from substantial damage.
Part of Hogsmil River in the Upper Mill area started leaking through its bank causing concern that the river could breach its bank.
After an examination, the cause of the leak was found to be root ingress, where the root of a tree or plant pushes through an object to get to water.
The leaks have been stopped with the construction of an additional concrete barrier just past the existing wall with fissures and voids filled with compacted topsoil.
Councillor Jean Smith, Chairman of the Environment Committee explains "Although the tree roots are damaging the original barrier they also form part of the barrier, so this was not a case of simply removing the tree roots (or the trees).
"Responsibility for the riverbank is in question, and, rather than engage in a protracted series of discussions, the Council decided that the best thing to do was to take immediate action before any damage to neighbouring properties or infrastructure occurred or the situation deteriorated further".
The Council Tree Officer is examining the area to see if any work can be undertaken with the trees to prevent any future damage.
The Council is also in discussion with third parties to determine exactly who is responsible for the riverbank maintenance.
