BRICKS and stones have reportedly been thrown into traffic on the M23 near Gatwick.
Police are investigating two reports of items being thrown onto the stretch of motorway near Smallfield and the airport.
The first incident occurred on September 24 around 4.25pm, when a man his 60s was travelling northbound. An item, thought to be a house brick, was dropped onto the carriageway, causing a dent to the passenger side door.
Yesterday (Thursday) another driver saw smaller items, believed to be stones, being thrown on to the road in the same area. This occurred at around 7pm and officers were quickly on the scene.
Investigating officer Sergeant Kevin Simpkins from the Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood Team, has warned the consequences of throwing items into fast-moving could be fatal.
He said: "It is frightening, that for whatever reason, people think it is acceptable to throw objects at moving vehicles.
"What may seem like a laugh at the time can quickly escalate into something a lot more serious, people have been killed because of mindless acts like this and we will be doing all we can to find those responsible."
Sergeant Simpkins also urged anyone else who might have witnessed the incidents to get in touch with police.
He added: "We are making a number of enquiries in the local area including CCTV and I would urge anyone who has a business, home or other property with this facility in this vicinity to also contact us as this may prove vital to our investigation.
"Officers from both the neighbourhood team and the roads policing unit will be carrying out patrols in this area to prevent further occurrences."
Anyone who can assist with this investigation is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference 45140080975 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
