POLICE watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), has launched an investigation into the conduct of a former Surrey Police detective who was investigating Jimmy Savile.
The retired officer - identified as DI3 in a Surrey Police report - is being investigated over their handling of an investigation in 2007 and 2008 into allegations of sexual abuse by Savile at Duncroft School in Staines.
The IPCC investigation is looking at the handling of the police investigation and whether information was passed to other police forces in a timely manner.
The investigation follows a referral by Surrey Police to the IPCC.
A statement from the IPCC said: "The IPCC has begun an independent investigation into the conduct of a now retired detective inspector who was involved in 2007 and 2008 in investigating allegations of sexual abuse by Savile at Duncroft School."
It added: "We are in correspondence with Surrey Police over the scope of the investigation."
In a separate incident, an internal Surrey Police investigation into why a reference to Savile was omitted from a 2013 Surrey Police report on Operation Ornament, has concluded. The investigation, which was overseen by the IPCC, found the reference as omitted due to an honest error.
An IPCC statement said: "The investigation found the reference was omitted in error, but that officers had acted honestly and a genuine oversight did not amount to any misconduct. The IPCC has agreed the terms of reference for the investigation have been met."
