A BRIDE and groom became celebrities for the day when they "stood in" for George Clooney.

When rumours spread the Hollywood superstar was going to tie the knot with his fiancee in London, the press pack descended on Chelsea Old Town Hall on Friday, setting up camp.

When the doors opened and a happy couple stepped out, the scrum of photographers erupted and cameras rolled.

But the rumours turned out to be false and the 200-strong crowd unwittingly turned their attention on the couple who WERE getting married that morning.

As a result, Reigate woman Rebecca Dunsmore's plans for a "low-key" wedding with her sweetheart Martin English, a 44-year-old lawyer, turned out to be anything but the case.

Rebecca, 44, who works for a media law publication, said: "The day was a complete and utter shock – and one which we'll certainly never forget.

"When we arrived at Chelsea Old Town Hall there was a mountain of press photographers outside, as well as many inquisitive passers-by.

"We planned a low-key wedding with about 20 close relatives, but there was nothing low-key about it! As we left the building there were flashlights going off everywhere.

"It was totally bizarre."

Since then news of the couple getting hitched has gone viral.

It has been picked up by some TV and radio stations as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

At 8am on the day of their wedding, a notice was posted outside Chelsea Old Town Hall saying that they were "NOT conducting the wedding of Mr Clooney".

The rumours had been sparked after a wedding notice was posted last month at the register office specifying that the 53-year-old Oscar winner and his bride-to-be Amal Alamuddin had planned to wed – but in Italy.

The new Mrs English added: "Now I know how it feels to be a famous star in the spotlight, at least for a few minutes.

"With our close friends around us and perfect weather, all the press attention made for the most amazing day."
