A £1.8 million scheme to improve a five mile stretch of the M23/A23 near Hooley will start on Monday.
The work will involve resurfacing sections of the carriageway, renewing kerbing, drainage maintenance and the removal of unused lighting columns.
Parts of the road will be closed overnight between 10pm and 5.30am from Monday to Thursday and 11pm to 6am on Fridays.
The first phase, starting on Monday, July 21 will involve closures of the northbound M23 at Junction 8.
Fully signed diversions will be in place via the M25 and A22.
It is hoped the work will be completed in mid-October.
Highways Agency asset manager Janice Burgess said: "The carriageway improvements will provide road users with safe and reliable journeys on this busy route. We are working with Southern Gas Networks to ensure our work is co-ordinated and the Highways Agency work will be done overnight, when traffic flows are lowest which should minimise disruption. There will be no traffic restrictions during the day."
