GATWICK Airport says it is "business as usual" despite the Department for Transport beefing up security measures at airports today in response to a threat.

Reports have emerged from the US of concerns that terrorists are developing a bomb which could evade current security checks.

But the Department for Transport (DfT) has declined to increase the current threat level, which remains at 'substantial'.

Despite this, some security measures have been stepped up at airports around the country.

A DfT spokeswoman said "The UK Government keeps aviation security under constant review in conjunction with international partners and the aviation industry.

"We have taken the decision to step up some of our aviation security measures. For obvious reasons we will not be commenting in detail on those changes. The majority of passengers should not experience significant disruption. There will be no change to the threat level, which remains at substantial.

"The safety and security of the public is our paramount concern. The UK has some of the most robust aviation security measures and we will continue to take all the steps necessary to ensure that public safety is maintained."

A Gatwick spokesperson said: "Gatwick Airport operates in strict accordance to the Department for Transport security guidelines and procedures. "The airport is operating business as usual and remains vigilant on all matters relating to airport security."
