THE CLOCK was turned back hundreds of years at Reigate Fort at the weekend.

Many hundreds of visitors enjoyed the sights and sounds of Reigate Fort Garrison Days on Saturday and Sunday.

The days, mounted by the National Trust, included displays of marching and military practice of yesteryear, as well as gunfire and explosions.

People dressed as soldiers from World War Two, as well as Vikings and Anglo-Saxon warriors, staged re-enactments.

National Trust ranger Mark Richards said: "The event was a great success with almost 600 visitors attending."

The fort, on top of Reigate Hill, was built in 1898 to help protect London from attack by the nation's greatest adversary at the time, the French.
