HIGH-FLYERS from around the world converged on Woldingham for a spectacular show.

The London Air Show was held at the Green Dragons Paragliding and Hang Gliding Centre, off Slines Oak Road.

The showcase was not only the biggest event in the centre's history but also marked the 40th anniversary of aerial sport there.

Fliers came from the likes of New Zealand and the USA to take part.

Hot air balloons, micro gliders and children's kites added to the high-flying fun.

There were also Queen and Madness tribute bands to keep the hundreds of visitors entertained over the three-day event, between May 24 and 26 .

The centre's chief instructor Andy Shaw co-ordinated the show.

He said: "It was a massive success. At one time 47 gliders took to the sky.

"It rained a fair bit, but we had several hours where flying could take place.

"I didn't get much chance to get airborne because I was doing a lot of running around making sure everything went smoothly."

A former member of the Parachute Regiment, over the years Mr Shaw has won about 120 trophies in his sport.

This includes winning the British Paragliding Accuracy Championships several times, and leading the British team to the European Paragliding Championships.
