SHOPS, offices and even traffic lights have been affected by a powercut in Redhill this morning. The power first went out at just before 9am and according to UK Power Networks, electricity supplies to 182 customers in the Clarendon Road area were cut off. This was because a contractor had damaged an underground cable. Engineers from the power firm worked quickly to repair the fault, and power was restored at 10.22am. On Twitter, @QueenThrift said: "Arrived into #Redhill to be met by power cut carnage. Hopefully #Reigate errands will run a bit smoother." @Windmill_Driver said: "Major power failure at sainsbury's redhill still open and staff doing best they can." Sainsbury's was affected and shut its refrigerator and freezer counters. The Sun pub was also closed. Firefighters were called to rescue a man stuck in a lift at offices in Queensway. A UK Power Networks spokesman said: "Power supplies to 182 customers in the Clarendon Road area of Redhill were interrupted at 8.43am today (June 6) after a third party damaged an underground electricity cable. "We are committed to providing a reliable electricity supply and, in a bid to reduce the number of power interruptions caused by contractors damaging underground cables, actively encourage any firm undertaking work to contact us in advance for advice and free cable locating maps, to help them avoid our cables. This is vital for their own safety as well as for the security of electricity supplies."
