TRUDGING through mud, braving icy water and dodging live electric wires isn't most people's idea of fun.

But 32 fearless men and women from across East Surrey teamed up to tackle the gruelling 12-mile, 24-obstacle Tough Mudder challenge.

Exhausted but triumphant, they all completed the course.

And their sterling efforts at the event in Henley, on April 26, raised more than £20,000 for the Warlingham-based Lily Foundation.

The slog included crawling under barbed wire mesh, climbing along monkey bars suspended over icy water, and running through waist-deep pits of mud.

Despite her exertions, mother-of-one Sara Willcocks, of White Knobs Way, Caterham, said: "If I'm honest I was terrified in advance but it was an awesome, amazing day. It was very muddy and very wet.

"We took about five hours to complete it, and all went round together."

The Lily Foundation was formed after the death of baby Lily Merritt in 2007, from a rare cell abnormality, mitochondrial disease, which is always fatal.

Alison Maguire, of Clovelly Avenue, Warlingham, was inspired by the bravery of her own daughter, who also died as a result of the disease.

Mrs Maguire, also the director of Research, Education and Family Support for the Lily Foundation, said: "Completing the course was a tribute to my daughter Niamh, who died from mitochondrial disease when she was just four.

"She was the toughest and bravest little girl I know and that is why I chose something as challenging as Tough Mudder."

Team Lily will complete their second Tough Mudder challenge in Kettering on July 12.
