SAUCY Surrey has topped the table for renting the erotic Fifty Shades trilogy.

The S&M-themed books by British author EL James outstripped competition to top bestseller charts all over the world last year.

But in August a fifth of all copies of the trilogy rented in the UK were taken out in Surrey, according to figures released by global statistics company Nielsen.

The books, dubbed "mummy porn", flew off the county's shelves all through the end of last year, with 16 per cent of October's UK rentals also taking place in the county.

Surrey libraries were forced to stock up on 200 copies of the popular titles to keep up with demand as they rocketed up the most-read charts.

Surrey County Council's cabinet member for community services, Helyn Clack, said: "EL James' books have really set the pulses racing in Surrey.

"It seems our librarygoers just can't get enough of Christian Grey's steamy antics."

Surrey County Council stocks 190,000 new books every year in its libraries, including the latest editions from authors such as Ian Rankin and John Grisham.

But the Fifty Shades trilogy has surpassed all contenders.

For some readers the books' unique subject matter made them appeal to readers.

Secretary Kim Watson, 52, from Redhill, said: "It's something different and something people don't really talk about.

"Although women like to think they are strong, they like to be controlled sometimes."

But the books' popularity in the county has not stopped discussion over their subject matter.

One reader, who asked not to be named, added: "I've picked out pieces of it. It's fantasy, women's fantasy.

"I suppose the cover was plain; it didn't look like a raunchy book, it looked like a serious book.

"But I have some concerns over the book in terms of women's health and domestic violence."

Surrey's libraries stock about 1.2 million books as well as CDs and DVDs.
