THE success story of a skatepark which became "so much more" to thousands of youngsters in Caterham has been highlighted before a VIP audience.
Over the past 15 years Skaterham – based in a former military chapel – has provided a haven of adventure and enjoyment for many people from far and wide.
And its renown has now been outlined to 14 former High Sheriffs of Surrey, as well as mayors from across the county.
Skaterham manager Darren Barnes – together with four young users – spoke about the centre's work at the 21st anniversary celebrations of the High Sheriff Youth Awards (HSYA) scheme, held in Leatherhead on March 20.
The HSYA has channelled tens of thousands of pounds into youth projects.
This includes five separate grants totalling £7,000 to boost facilities at Skaterham.
Based in Coulsdon Road, Skaterham offers BMX and scooter riding on ramps as well as DJ mixing sessions, sports events and camping weekends.
Former High Sheriff Sally Varah said the Skaterham project had been given several grants as its activities expanded because it motivated many 'hard to reach' youngsters to get involved.
She said: "Skaterham started out as a skatepark but rapidly morphed into so much more.
"The initial grants the HSYA made gave it 'that extra oomph' and the project now has an active membership of 6,000 young people with 13 different sessions each week."
Last year's grant paid towards a residential week for youngsters in Cornwall.
Mr Barnes said: "Over the years we have had a total of about 18,000 members.
"Young people come to us mainly from the Caterham and Croydon area, although we also have a following from Redhill and Sutton.
"Skaterham is the only indoor skate park in Surrey."
Skaterham's co-ordinator Marilyn Payne was appointed MBE in 2009 for her work with young skaters.
The centre was nominated for a National Crime Award in 2005 for its work with local youths.
It is launching coaching sessions on Thursdays, starting next week, in BMX, scooter and skateboarding.
Coaching for under-11s is from 4.30pm, with a session for over-11s from 6.30pm.
