THE disintegrating surface of an East Surrey trunk road is to be repaired this summer.

Work to fix the A23 in Hooley will run from July until September. The project will also include repairs to pavements and the removal of defunct lampposts.

News of the works emerged following a meeting between Hooley Residents' Association chairman Danny Daniels, borough councillor Keith Foreman, Reigate MP Crispin Blunt and Highways Agency officials.

Mr Blunt, who wrote to the agency in December to urge action, said: "I am delighted that there is now the firm prospect to finally resolve this issue.

"This repair work has been unreasonably delayed for an inordinate amount of time."

He added that repairs have been delayed for four years, with reasons ranging from the Olympics to a planned gas main repair.

The resurfacing programme will cause lane closures on the A23 between 10pm and 5am, when preparatory work for a promised new gas main will also be carried out.

In 2015 the road will be completely closed for about two weeks in one direction, probably northwards, either at Easter or in early August, in order to lay a new gas main.
