A SCHOOL has said it is working hard to support Year 1 children who have had four different teachers in two terms.

After their first teacher left for promotion at Christmas and her replacement left soon after, a third started at Salfords Primary School on March 10. In a letter sent to parents on March 6, head Georgina Beaven said she was very mindful the class had already experienced disruption during the academic year and that the replacement teacher would mean no interim cover would be necessary.

However, the teacher departed a week later, leading to concern amongst some parents of pupils at the Copsleigh Avenue School.

The father of one five-year-old pupil, who asked not to be named, said: "I find it wholly unacceptable. How am I supposed to know how my child is progressing if the teacher is constantly changing? We did think about moving schools, but why should they move away from their friends?"

In a statement, chairman of governors Chris Botten said: "The Year 1 teacher left at Christmas to take on a new job which was a promotion for her.

"The teacher appointed from January unfortunately had to leave for personal reasons. Since then the class has been covered by fully qualified supply teachers whilst the leadership and governing body of the school seek an appropriate permanent appointment."

He said the teacher who lasted a week had been procured from a supply agency and did not turn out to be suitable for the post.

"The leadership are working hard to support the pupils during this time," he added. "The teacher in the classroom at the moment will be in place until Easter."

He said he was not aware of any truth in claims at least one parent had removed their child from the school due to the disruption.
