Changes to Horley's one-way system hailed a success

MAJOR changes to Horley town centre's one-way system have been hailed "tremendous".

Highways authority Surrey County Council has reversed the one-way system on Consort Way East to ease congestion at the town's busy Victoria Road junction.

However, the final stretch of the road has also been made two-way to ensure drivers still have easy access to the council's Central Car Park.

The speed and frequency of traffic light changes at the Victoria Road junction are also being evaluated by the county council to see if it could ease congestion further.

Horley town councillor Mike George said: "The aim is to try and ease the congestion between Waitrose and Collingwood Batchelor. Businesses in the area were consulted and didn't have any problems and as far as I can tell it seems to be working."

The change, made in early February, is part of an 18-month trial.

Horley Town Council clerk Alan Jones said: "Members of the Horley Town Management Group held their monthly meeting on Monday night.

"Members were satisfied with the implementation of the experimental traffic order and its impact to date, although further modifications of the traffic light phasing have been requested."

The road reversal follows concerns expressed by the town council and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council to the highways authority regarding high traffic levels in the area.

Local businesses praised the change and are hoping it stays in place past the trial period.

Guy Collingwood, owner of nearby department store Collingwood Batchelor, said: "I'm happy with it, there's less congestion so that is good news.

"It used to cause difficulties for customers trying to access the car park."

Fiona Stimpson, chairman of the Horley and District Chamber of Commerce, said: "We hope it's a trial that becomes permanent, it really has made a tremendous difference to that junction."
