A MAN was taken to hospital with a serious head injury after being assaulted in Caterham as he walked home with his wife and two children on Saturday night. Police were called to the junction of Croydon Road and Crescent Road at 11.50pm after the man, who is in his 40s, was punched in the head outside the Old Surrey Hounds Pub. It is believed the victim approached the two offenders after they shouted something at the family as they walked past the pub. He was then punched before hitting the ground, with the offenders running off down Croydon Road in the direction of Commonwealth Road. The victim was taken by ambulance to East Surrey Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition. Investigating officer Detective Constable Gemma Scott said: "This was a horrific assault on a man who was walking home with his wife and two young children which demonstrates the callous nature of the attackers, so if you know who they are you are urged to contact officers with information. "It is possible those involved returned home in an agitated state or have spoken to someone about their crime, if you have your suspicions please call police as we need to bring these offenders to justice. "I understand for whatever reason, sometimes people want to give information anonymously and this can be done through the independent charity Crimestoppers who can be contacted on 0800 555 111." The two offenders are described as white men, aged in their 30s, between 5ft 9ins to 6ft 2ins tall, of stocky build, with short dark hair and smartly dressed. A number of enquiries are being carried out in the vicinity including house-to-house calls and monitoring of CCTV. Anyone who can help Surrey Police with their investigation is urged to contact them on 101 quoting reference 45140024674. The independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
