CHILD sex predator Jimmy Savile may have abused children at a former children's home in Banstead.
Beechholme children's home, which was in Fir Tree Road, is among 21 institutions named by the Government today at which Savile is alleged to have carried out abuse between the 1960s and 1980s.
Education Secretary Michael Gove said in a statement: "This information was uncovered as part of the document review process undertaken by the Metropolitan Police Service on behalf of the Department of Health.
"It is right that steps are taken to explore these allegations, to find out what happened and why.
"In most cases the work will be conducted by the relevant local authority; in others the relevant institution or a legacy organisation will take the lead."
Savile, who died in 2011, before his crimes came to light, is said to have abused more than 200 people over a period of six decades.
Another former Surrey children's home - Broomfield in Guildford - was also named on today's list.
Surrey County Council spokesman Kevin Richardson said: "Following a request from the Secretary of State for Education for an investigation into 21 care homes and schools across the country dealing with allegations dating back to the 1960s, we can confirm that we are working with the police to look into allegations at two care homes in Surrey."
Beechholme was opened in 1879 as a residential school for poor children from the slums of Kensington and Chelsea. It was also known as Kensington and Chelsea District School. It closed in 1974 and was demolished the following year.
