FIREFIGHTERS scaled a rooftop to get into a 5th floor flat and release a three-year-old boy with his finger crushed in a door.
The youngster had trapped his index finger against the hinge-side of the front door of a flat in Croydon Road, Caterham.
Paramedics were called but were stranded on the other side of the door, unable to fully open it for fear of crushing the boy's finger further. So they called in a fire crew from Godstone to help out.
Firefighter Tony Smith used working at height gear to climb out of a neighbour's flat, scramble along the roof, and climb through the window of the boy's flat, at about 5pm yesterday (Tuesday).
"It was a bit of an unusal call," he said. "We couldn't open the door inwards because it would have squashed the boy's finger more. The only way in was along the roof and in through the window.
"His finger was well trapped up to his knuckle. He was making a bit of noise.
"I distracted him a bit, got a screwdriver and just levered it against the door a couple of milimetres, enough for him to pull his finger out. It was like a piece of paper, it was just flat."
Paramedics took the child to hospital.
