AN APPEAL fund in memory of Breck Bednar – the 14-year-old schoolboy who died from a neck wound– has brought a huge response.

More than £17,000 has been raised in the eight days since the appeal was launched online – far exceeding the initial £10,000 target.

The youngster, of Crescent, Road, Caterham, died on February 17 in a flat in Essex.

The death of the "kind and gifted" boy, who attended St Bede's School in Redhill, has elicited a tremendous response.

Because Breck had a passion for computing, the fund set up by his family in his memory will go towards computer education for young people, including the "responsible use of technology".

The largest donation so far is the £5,000 from international brokerage firm BGC Partners, where Breck's father Barry is managing director.

Dozens of other contributions include £700 from Alan Fyfe – who wrote on the fund's Just Giving page "every parents' worst nightmare"; £500 "on behalf of the whole community of Caterham School"; and £100 from Brady and Nancy, "covering your whole family in prayers".

Breck's mother, Lorin LaFave, is a teaching assistant and school governor at St John's C of E Primary School in Markfield Road, Caterham.

A raffle at the school – for soft toys and an Easter egg – will see proceeds split between Breck's fund and the Whyteleafe flood relief appeal.

Computer engineer Lewis Daynes, 18, of Rosebery Road, Grays, has been charged with Breck's murder.

He was remanded in custody at Chelmsford Crown Court on February 21.

A plea and case management hearing is due to be held there on April 28.
