A 'HORRIFIC' and unprovoked attack left a man with serious head and facial injuries. The attack, which was witnessed by the victim's family, including his young child, took place close to Stoneleigh Station late last night. Between 9.10pm-9.30pm the victim, a man in his 50s, was walking along Clandon Close after leaving the station when he was approached from behind by a white male. The assailant hit him and the man fell and struck his head on a brick wall leaving him requiring hospital treatment. Investigating officer Detective Constable Jo Clarke, said: "This is a horrific and unprovoked attack on an innocent man and I would urge anyone who has information which may help the investigation to make contact as we need to find the person responsible as a matter of urgency. "The aftermath of this assault was witnessed by the victim's family, including his young child, which was devastating and no doubt the impact of the assault will stay with them for some time. "The offender may have spoken to someone following the attack and I would urge this person to contact police, they may have not realised the severity of the assault and the lasting effect it will have. "We will do all we can to bring this offender to justice." Stoneleigh Neighbourhood Officer PC Mark Simpson sought to reassure residents in the area. He said: "No doubt news of this assault will leave the Stoneleigh community shocked but I would like to reassure residents that incidents of this nature are extremely rare. "Neighbourhood officers will be providing additional reassurance patrols in the area over the coming days and I would urge anyone who has information on this assault or would like advice about protecting yourself to approach the team." Contact Surrey Police on 101 with information quoting reference 45140014644, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
